About the 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat

A key priority for the Government of Canada is to strengthen diversity and inclusion so that all Canadians can participate fully as members of Canadian society.

The Government’s commitment to 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians is a key part of this priority. The Government is committed to promoting 2SLGBTQI+ equality, protecting 2SLGBTQI+ rights, and addressing discrimination against 2SLGBTQI+ communities, both past and current.

On October 26, 2021, the LGBTQ2 Secretariat, as it was formerly called and housed at Canadian Heritage, moved to Women and Gender Equality. On that same date, the Prime Minister appointed the Honourable Marci Ien as Minister for this Department.

The 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat activities include working with 2SLGBTQI+ stakeholders across the country. These activities help inform the Government on issues and potential solutions that are important to 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians.

The 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat also works across federal public service to support the integration of 2SLGBTQI+ considerations into the everyday work of the Government of Canada. These efforts focus on ensuring that issues related to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are taken into account in the development of federal policies, programs and laws. As such, it is inspired and guided by the First Federal 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan... Building our future, with pride.

To achieve this, the Secretariat works with public servants in different departments and agencies to help them apply inclusive approaches that consider the potential impacts of policies, programs and laws on Canadians of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions.

While the 2SLGBTQI+ Secretariat is not a department and does not provide program funding, it helps link 2SLGBTQI+ stakeholders with relevant federal organizations who do have funding opportunities available.

Note: Since August 2022, the Government of Canada uses 2SLGBTQI+ (2S: at the front, recognizes Two-Spirit people as the first 2SLGBTQI+ communities; L: Lesbian; G: Gay; B: Bisexual; T: Transgender; Q: Queer; I: Intersex, considers sex characteristics beyond sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression; +: is inclusive of people who identify as part of sexual and gender diverse communities, who use additional terminologies). The acronym often used internationally is LGBTI (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex).
